Basic Solarwinds Orion Troubleshooting guide

This article provides quick information about  how you can Troubleshoot your current environment in case of failure "SYSTEM DOWN"situation and bring the system UP and running back as soon as possible .

This will also help you to start your Basic Troubleshooting steps offline where you have secured environment and restriction sending diagnostics to Solarwinds Technical support

Later on you can review installed health check and try to find out the root cause with the help of Solarwinds Diagnostics .

Please read this post carefully and help us to improve the steps where needed.

 

Further this article will help you address the most common reasons of  performance issues on to your server without sending the diagnostics to SolarWinds support  .

 

LETS JUMP IN

 

System Down Situations  :

 

Orion Services flapping

Orion Web Console is Down

Orion Polling is Down

Orion Server is not responding

Orion Web console loading with Errors

Orion Server Disk is filling up Quickly

 

Orion Services flapping

So you always check your Orion Services Manager where you can see  multiple services listed below where generally you found all Services must be UP and running all the time and should not be flapping. If you have noticed any service is flapping or not UP and running you can follow the basic steps in order to correct the issue quickly.

 

                                                            Check free disk space on the Orion Server as well as SQL server

                                                            Check you are not using SQL Express Edition which have 10 Gig limit

                                                            Disable any installedantivirusand confirm that no longer active

                                                            Try reboot the System and check the Services are backup UP

                                                           Check if there is any other user is not logged on to the Orion Server > Task Manager > Users (Log off them)

                                                    Logon to the Orion Server with Local Administrator account (NOT WITH DOMAIN ADMIN)

                                                    Then repair the Solarwinds Orion Core Service & Configuration Wizard as below

 

            1. Log in to Orion NPM Server as a Windows Local Administrator.
            2. Click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
            3. Right-click SolarWinds Orion Core Services, and select Repair.
              After the repair, the Configuration Wizard is launched.

                                              Complete the Configuration Wizard just clicking NEXT & YES options

                                                             Note that configuring the website might take a few minutes.

                                                             Complete the above steps and then check the Services are backup again ?

Please Note: If you are running Solarwinds Evaluation version and evaluation period is expired  (Syslog & Traps ) Servers will not Start .

 

                                         

Important Note: While Running the Configuration Wizard > Keep opening the Orion Service Manager > Make Sure all Orion Services keep on  STOPPEDstate .

If you noticed any service is Flapping during the Configuration Wizard hit the "Shutdown Everything" on the Orion Service Console until you see the Configuration Wizard start Configuring Website portion

 

Important Note:

While running the Configuration Wizard Open the Task Manager > Make sure the CPU and Memory is stable and have not reached up to 100% utilization for longer time perioud specially when the Solarwinds Services will be started by the Configuration Wizard in the last stage.

 

 

 

                                                                 Sub Situations :

                                                                          Orion Service repaired failure refused to repair

                                                                 Configuration Wizard failed to connect to the Orion SQL Server

                                                                 Configuration Wizard failed with Database Configuration Failure Error

                                                                 Configuration Wizard failure with Website configuration failure

Where how and what Orion Service logs i should check for any Errors / Issues ?

Orion logs are always available under this location (Please Note programData Folder is system hidden folder by default)

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Orion

 

For Example :

If you have noticed the Orion JobEngine is Flapping and Unable to Start .

You can open this log file below . (Scroll Down to the bottom of the file and check what type of Error you have while this Service failure

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\JobEngine.v2\Logs\SolarWinds.JobEngineService_v2_13.log

 

Solarwinds Information Service V3 is failed to start of flapping

You can always check your log file here > Open the file scroll down to the bottom and check what type of ERRORS you have.

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\InformationService\v3.0\Orion.InformationService.log

 

Solarwinds Recommendation Service is flapping

Check this file Open and check the last ERROR in the file if its repeating again and again.

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Recommendations\Recommendations.Services.log

 

SolarWinds Cortex Service flapping

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Cortex\cortex.log

 

So all the logs are basically available under the same location.

Tips and Tricks opening up Support Ticket with Solarwinds.

Yes you can always open Support Ticket here however i would like you to give some tips and tricks before you open up support ticket with Solarwinds so you will get faster / quicker response as well as quick resolution .

1) Open up MS word document

2) Add screen shots of your issue in the world document

3) If you have any service flapping issue still not resolved with above steps

                    Take a screen shot of the Orion Service Manager with Service Flapping  add in the above Word document

                    Open Task Manager and Take Screen shot of Each Tab and add in the document

                    Now go to the respective Service log as explained above and add the last ERROR repeating in the Word Document      

                    If you have  any Error with Configuration Wizard failure take screen shot and add in the Document

                    If your web console is working go to the > Settings > All Settings > Polling Engines (Take Screen shot add in the Word document )

                    Add all the steps you have already done as above

                    Provide details when this issue occurred and what changes are been made / Such as any Windows update / Solarwinds Upgrade Done.

Submit a Ticket | SolarWinds Customer Portal

Ticket Subject : Always add the Error in the Subject what you have in the screen shots / or in the Service Logs .

Now attach the Word Document with the ticket

Add your direct line phone number

Add your City Location in the ticket

Once Done .

Upload the diagnostic with the ticket number you have received.

Reply to the ticket email that you have uploaded the Diagnostics

Job Done.
